IRS and Arizona Department of Revenue
are "Champions"

WASHINGTON - Vice President Al Gore recognized the joint efforts of the Southwest District of the Internal Revenue Service and the Arizona Department of Revenue to improve service to the public at a "Breakfast of Champions" on Capitol Hill on May 6, 1996. IRS Commissioner Margaret Milner Richardson accepted the award -- one of six Public Service Excellence Awards for Intergovernmental Programs -- which pays tribute to groups of government employees whose programs exhibit the highest standards of dedication, excellence and accomplishment.

The ceremony opened the 11th annual celebration of Public Service Recognition Week, May 6 through 12, 1996.

The IRS and the Arizona Department of Revenue were honored for their numerous joint efforts to improve service to the public. Some of these are telephone "hot switches" to transfer taxpayer assistance and collections telephone calls between IRS and the Arizona Department of Revenue, joint workshops and seminars for small businesses and joint installment payment agreements for taxpayers who owe both federal and state income taxes.

"This award recognizes the hard work and dedication of the employees of the IRS and the Arizona Department of Revenue," said Commissioner Richardson. "Working together, they have proven that we can increase efficiency and public service using existing agency resources. When that happens, all Americans benefit."

Director Harold Scott represented the Arizona Department of Revenue at the ceremony. Representing the Southwest District of the IRS were District Director Mark Cox and Barbara Hunt, assistant Fed/State coordinator in the district.
