Name Change for New IRS Operating Division
WASHINGTON - The Internal Revenue Service has changed the name of one of its new, customer-focused business units to the Tax Exempt and Government Entities Operating Division to emphasize service to state, local, and Indian tribal governments. The IRS had previously announced the division as the Tax Exempt Operating Division.
The new name will more accurately reflect our customer base, said Evelyn
Petschek, Commissioner Designate of the new division. It stresses how seriously the
IRS takes its relationships with state, local, and tribal governments."
The IRS has been consulting over the past few months with Indian tribal leaders and
organizations on the formation of the new division. We appreciate all the
recommendations we have received from our various constituent groups, especially from the
Indian tribal governments, said Petschek.
The IRS is planning a sweeping modernization of its information and business systems
and processes, and a total reorganization of its structure. The modernization and
restructuring will significantly improve service to taxpayers.
The Tax Exempt and Government Entities Operating Division is one of four business units
with which the IRS is replacing its current geographic-based structure. The four divisions
will focus on taxpayer segments and will be known as the Wage and Investment Income, Small
Business and Self Employed, Large and Mid-Size Business, and Tax Exempt and Government
Entities Operating Divisions.
The Tax Exempt and Government Entities Operating Division will, in turn, serve three
distinct customer segments employee plans, exempt organizations, and government
entities.
The Tax Exempt and Government Entities Operating Division will include an Indian Tribal
Government Office with locations around the country, as well as in Washington. The office
will develop a government-to-government relationship between the IRS and Indian tribal
governments, as envisioned by various Presidential Executive Orders.
Headquarters for the Tax Exempt and Government Entities Operating Division will be
established in Washington, D.C., in late 1999, with operations scheduled to begin in late
1999 or early 2000.
